CINEMA

My Best Friend's Wedding
(Directed by P.J. Hogan; Starring Julia Roberts, Dermots Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett)

Two friends make a pact that if they aren't married by the age of 28, they will marry each other. Shortly before D-Day, he finds a bride and she realises that she's been in love with him all this time. Australian director Hogan's first big Hollywood venture doesn't have the charm of his earlier film, Muriel's Wedding, but it is a witty tale of love and longing.

Tomorrow Never Dies
(Directed by Roger Spottis-Wode; Starring Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh)

Nothing new about this Bond film except that this time the man's sidekick, the gorgeous Michelle Yeoh, matches him kick for kick. The rest is the standard villain-steals-nuclear-bombs, Bond-saves-world kind of routine. Despite the predictability, a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

THEATRE

Circus
(Directed by Bharat Dabholkar; Starring Viju Khote, Tanaaz Currim, Pratibha; March 1; Rang Sharda Auditorium, Mumbai)

The popular Bottoms Up gang is back with another satirical take-off on the idiosyncracies of modern Indian living. A Hinglish musical revue brimming with gags, witty dialogues, skits, songs and dances, Circus spoofs just about everything, from political situations and television programmes to trends and fads. Not so much theatre as a variety entertainment show.

VIDEO

Culliver's Travels
(Directed by Charles Sturridge; Starring Ted Danson;
20th Century Fox; Rs 450)

Nice movie, and you don't have to be a kid to enjoy it. Takes you through all of Gulliver's adventures, as a giant and then as a Lilliputian himself. Trouble is it tends to get slightly boring in parts. Good special effects -- nowhere near the Jurassic Park sort, but interesting all the same. Worth viewing.

ODD ENDS

Affinity Cards

Citibank pays a tribute to the country's armed forces with an affinity card for army and air force personnel. A percentage of the profits will go to the War Widows' Association. The nice touch is that the card will be accepted at service canteens and clubs.
