ART

India Portfolio-Vijay Kumar
(LTG Art Gallery, Delhi; December 1-15)

Although US-based, Vijay Kumar remains well in touch with the political landscape of his motherland. The present series of sketches, with the demolition of the Babri Masjid in the background, reflects on the destruction of Gandhian ideals.

DANCE

Tredha & Pourushl-Lokchhanda Cultural Unit
(Midnapore, Calcutta, Mumbai, Delhi; December 17-30)

These two compositions fuse three distinct styles of the martial-art-cum-dance form, Chhau -- Mayurbhanjh Chhau of Orissa, Purulia Chhau of West Bengal and Serai Kella Chhau of Bihar. What's interesting is that Tredha will be performed by traditional Chhau artistes from the three eastern Indian states.

MUSIC

Higher Ground-Barbra Streisand
(SonyMusic; Rs 100)

This album is dedicated to Virginia Kelly, President Bill Clinton's mother, and what a tribute it is! While the music is absolutely breathtaking, it's the lyrics that are bound to catch your attention. Every single number is worth the money spent.

MOVIE

Homage to Francois Truffaut
(India International Centre & French Cultural Centre,
Delhi; December 4-18)

For cinema lovers these films by the inimitable Truffaut are manna from celluloid heaven. The "revolutionary of New Wave cinema" remains fresh even today. This selection includes his pathbreaking Les Quatre Cents Coups (Trouble-maker) to La Femme d'a Cote (The Woman Next Door).

FOOD

Pegasus
(Connaught Place, New Delhi)

Nirula's, the name synonymous with fast-food outlets in the capital, has opened a bar in the heart of the city. There's plenty to attract people to this place: interesting drinks (of course) -- both alcoholic and non -- good food in a warm atmosphere, and some nice jazz to go with it
