Reckless Revelations

SYCOPHANTIC

Rajiv was brought up in the Nehru-Gandhi family of freedom fighters, great leaders and statesmen. When he was only 16 years old, his father passed away ... From childhood Rajiv had immense interest in technology. Rajiv had no interest in politics. He had distanced himself from politics ... pressure and circumstances made him enter politics, and once he plunged into politics, he made a mark for himself.

Rajiv was a champion of human rights and was opposed to oppression and exploitation. According to him, apartheid was a blot on civilisation. He wanted to see India as a great power by the beginning of the 21st century. It may be that he was not cut out for politics. Nevertheless by his charismatic personality, he won the hearts of his countrymen. His smiling face and his pattern of behaviour and his manners were so attractive and appealing that he would turn his foes into friends. Though he lost power in December 1989, when Shri V.P. Singh became the prime minister, he was on the crest of his popularity and seen as if destined to be the future prime minister of India.

INTEMPERATE

The nature and levels of militancy varied and a period came when it assumed anti-national character and penetrated into the social fabric of the Tamil population and the political parties too were entrenched as the ethnic issue was an emotional issue with all Tamils.

By the end of 1987, the regional opposition political parties of Tamil Nadu propagated views arousing considerable public antipathy towards the central government.

The DMK had been ... instrumental in providing a safe sanctuary to the LTTE and also in giving advice, active assistance, finance ... It was reported that Shri M. Karunanidhi himself was instrumental in ensuring that things went smoothly for the LTTE ... At one stage, when paucity of finance was affecting the LTTE, Shri Karunanidhi is reported to have suggested floating of a fake organisation called "Relief Association for Sri Lankan Tamils" with Kasi Anandan and Natesan, LTTE activists, as office-bearers to facilitate diversion of government funds ...

BIZARRE

Threat perceptions from stray sources, which apparently appear unrelated, assume significance in a scenario where there exists evidence of underhand linkages among seemingly disparate hostile forces.

On March 2, 1991, two head constables of cid of Haryana Police were apprehended by security personnel near the residence of Shri Rajiv Gandhi. During interrogation, one head constable admitted that he had been deputed to keep a watch on the nearby Congress headquarters ... The other stated that he had come to meet the head constable deputed there ... No plausible explanation for the presence of these two head constables has come forth.

An unverified information was furnished by an intelligence agency during October 1989 which categorically stated that the Queen of Nepal had asked Major General Aditya Shamsher Jang Bahadur to arrange for assassination of Shri Rajiv Gandhi. He was allowed to spend up to Rs 10 crore for the assignment.
