ART
Scuptures and Graphics -- By Somnath Hore
(Art Heritage: Delhi; Nov 15 -18)

Elegies on canvas -- this more or less describes the powerful works of Somnath Hore on display. Tragedies he witnessed in the 1940s, like the Japanese bombing of Chittagong and the Great Bengal Famine, are recaptured in Hore's sculptures and graphics -- a silent testimony to the suffering and depravity of humanity.

THEATRE
Waiting for Godot
(Shri Ram Centre, Delhi; Nov 5)

Naseeruddin Shah and Benjamin Gilani play the immortal vagabonds Vladimir and Estragon in Samuel Beckett's classic play on post-holocaust Europe. Directed by Gilani, the production is a fund-raiser for the theatre resource centre, Natarang Prathishtan.

ODD ENDS
Patiala Peg
(Hotel Imperial, Delhi)

It had to happen -- a pub called Patiala Peg. This new watering hole in the heart of the capital is not for the faint-hearted if one goes by the exotic selection -- Hottest Pants on the Rocks, to name one. A heady mix indeed.

MUSIC
Festival of Andhra Pradesh

(Necklace Road Open Air Theatre; Hyderabad; Nov 1-8)

A rich fare of music and dance marks the state formation day celebrations. With Hyderabad's Hussain Sagar lake as the backdrop, masters such as Bismillah Khan, M. Balamuralikrishna, Birju Maharaj and Kelucharan Mahapatra are slated to perform.

Mystic Love -- Compositions of Meera
(Ninad; Rs 75)

In this album, Padmaram and mahesharam, folk singers from the Meghwal community of Rajasthan, bring a delicate rusticity to Meerabai's compositions. Intense, melancholic -- steeped as they are in love and longing -- and sometimes playful, the dulcet tones are derived from the tradition of the Lok Ragas. Mystic Love grows on the listener with time.
