ART Fictive Landscape--Paintings by Paramjit Singh Paramjit Singh's painterly forays into nature and his interplay with light continue -- they're as much an inner journey for the artist. Attention to detail is underlined in each image and a brilliant splash of colours and tonal variations bring alive the countryside. The imagined landscapes unfold a gamut of emotions that correlate to the swinging moods of nature. The War--Prints and Etchings by Otto Dix Aggressively realistic, this collection of 50 etchings by the reputed German artist Otto Dix -- presented by Max Mueller Bhavan -- brings out the sombre life behind the trenches during the First World War and makes a strong visual statement against the horrors of war. His work earned him the ire of the Nazis and three decades after his death, his work still speaks to us. Exhibition of Drawings by J Sultan Ali A sober, more reflective Ali presents images that are indigenised. They capture the essence and various facets of contemporary India. The sketches which are predominantly in earthy hues, have strong, sure lines, evocative of the artist's mood. MUSIC Seduction--Composed by Ranjit Barot The fusion of western and Indian instruments -- including key- boards, the sarangi, violin, drums and bamboo flute -- is simply enchanting. The versatile music -- sometimes a tarana in Malhar or a vibrant jazz number, interspersed with some haunting vocals -- makes this audio live up to its title. Ras Rang Ras Rang is a collection of 22 thumris by renowned exponents of the field like Shobha Gurtu, Parveen Sultana, Jagdish Prasad and also Birju Maharaj. This double-pack collection covers most of the ras or emotions which are light and lively. A must buy for classical music lovers. Chachi 420 The Maachis team of lyricist Gulzar and composer Vishal have come up with a funky, irreverent track. It's not melodious or profound -- the title song goes Chupdi chikni chachi -- but still it's fun. And unlike other star singers, Kamalahasan, who does a duet with Asha Bhosle, is surprisingly in tune. |
