Coach Approach

Raima Deb Varma"I don't have much time these days, I've got exams," says Raima Deb Varma, 19. It figures. While her classmates were busy studying, she was shooting for her debut film, Vinay Shukla's controversial Godmother. And though being Suchitra Sen's grandchild helped, it helped even more that her co-star Shabana Azmi "really took care of me. She acted out my scenes for me before I came on so that I knew exactly what to do". Coming up next: two Bengali films, Moina and Ek Tuku Choan Lage. With a coach like Azmi, it's tough to go wrong.

K.R. SridharMars ... The final frontier ... And this prof has done what no man has done before. Arizona University associate professor K.R. Sridhar and his team have come up with something that could make human settlements on Mars a reality. Their Oxygen Generator System converts carbon dioxide to oxygen, and NASA's checking it out on a mission to Mars in 2001. For now, Sridhar recalls "the excitement I felt" as a schoolboy in Chennai when Neil Armstrong did what he did. That was many moons ago. See where the kid is now.

Johnny da Kamaal

Daler Mehndi and Johnny LeverTo all appearances it's a guest appearance, but this visitor steals the show. In Anari No. 1, Johnny Lever does a take-off on Daler Mehndi that takes the shine off even co-star Govinda. "I was looking for a comedy sequence to lighten up the second half," says director Kuku Kohli. "Johnny is such a good actor. I thought if he imitates a leading pop star, he could really do wonders." Remember Daler singing, "Tere jaisi, koi nahi, koi nahi, koi nahi (There's nobody like you)." You think he meant this johnny?

Promo Donna 'n' Pal

Jacqueline Lundquist and Raghavendra RathoreAn ambassador's wife, a former royal and silk: makes for a great story. Jacqueline Lundquist, wife of Washington's man in India, teamed up with designer Raghavendra Rathore of the Jodhpur clan, for an Assamese silk expo last week. "During a trip to the North-east last year, I fell in love with their silks," she sighs. So she agreed to give her house as a venue for a fashion show to Rakhee Seth, a promoter of the Assamese fabric. She helped Seth make the arrangements, Rathore made the clothes. He even had his designs on Jackie. Hey! she just wore one of his outfits that day.
