Ghost Writer
Namita GokhaleNamita Gokhale's having fun with this one. Her latest novel, The Book of Shadows, is being launched on August 13. Why? Because it's a Friday, silly. "Friday the 13th is lucky for me," she explains. "The day is also appropriate since this book is an out-and-out ghost story." Part of the tale is told by a ghost, says the 43-year-old who earlier wrote Paro and A Himalayan Love Story. Only novelist we know who admits to having a ghost writer.

India In Love
Joseph Fiennes"Isn't he cute?" trilled suchitra Krishnamoorthy, looking across at Joseph Fiennes. Sure he is. The hero of hubby Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth was in India last week. At a post-screening reception held at British Council in Delhi, while a rather forlorn-looking Krishnamoorthy moaned, "I'm here to smile and play the part of my husband's pretty wife", Fiennes took the proceedings with admirable calm. Even when an enthusiastic fan gushed, "I liked you much much more in Shakespeare in Love. When I heard you would be here, I just had to had to make it." Or when an elderly gentleman inquired guilelessly, "Have you acted in any films other than Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love?" Later, Fiennes managed to get a word in edgeways. What's his next project? "Paying my rent." Did he get to see much of India? "It's a pity I've had so little time on this trip. But I plan to come back soon. I'd like to spend two months exploring India thoroughly." We'd like that too.

Hema MaliniJai Ma Hema Ki
This is getting to be a habit with Hema Malini. After over a decade of playing Durga on stage, Bollywood's definitive dream girl is playing Durga, Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati, Kali and every other mata you can think of in the forthcoming teleserial Jai Mata Ki. Hemaji, says 40-year-old director Puneet Issar, "is the apt casting for it. She's still beautiful and she's got that respected image." In this publicity-driven age, even a goddess needs an image, remember?

Vyjayantimala Bali and son PraveenAmma's Boy
No ma, she wasn't expecting this. When producer Anpalaya Prabhakaran called on actress-MP Vyjayantimala Bali, she was surprised. After all, she'd given up acting ages ago. But Prabhakaran was eyeing her son Praveen. The 25-year-old has now been signed on as the lead in the Tamil film Kannodu Kanpathellam. Is he nervous? No way. "Apart from the director," he says, "I have a gifted actress at home to fine-tune my acting capabilities." Really ma, what luck!
