COVER STORY: ATTACK ON PARLIAMENT

Shootout at the House

A.
11:41 a.m.
(Parliament Street Gate)
A white Ambassador car (DL 3CJ 1527) with a red beacon enters the complex from the Parliament Street end. It speeds past the main gate and the porch towards the gate on the Vijay Chowk-Raisina Road end. Sitting inside are five armed militants.

B.
11:41 a.m.

The car swerves to the right and grabs the attention of security personnel. Security Officer J.P. Yadav asks the driver to stop. When the car rushes past him near gate 12, he raises an alarm over the walkie-talkie. The terrorists open fire at Yadav and kill him. The car, with 30 kg of RDX, speeds on. There is an exchange of fire with Kant's security which leads to doors into the building being shut.

C.
11:41 a.m.

Seconds later, the Ambassador finds its path blocked by a number of cars parked outside gate 11. The cars are part of the vice-president's convoy. The Ambassador, forced to brake hard, veers sharply, striking one of the cars. There is a wall that prevents further access.

D.
11:42 a.m.

The militants rush out firing, and scale the wall. Securitymen order all gates to be shut so that the armed men can't enter the main building

E.
11:44 a.m.
(Main Gate)
A fifth militant breaks away from the group, and rushes towards the main gate. He lobs several hand grenades and shoots indiscriminately from his assault rifle. He is shot by a commando and detonates the RDX tied around his body near the gate.

F.
11:50 a.m.

The four other militants run towards the offices of Advani and Vajpayee. The three militants spray bullets at the security forces, killing four policemen and a gardener. But they are easily outgunned and three are killed between gate 8 and 9 while looking for an entry point into the building.

G.
11:55 a.m.

The sole militant alive tries to climb to the first floor with the help of TV cables. Failing to do so, he hobbles towards gate 5, from where the prime minister is expected to come in. CRPF personnel shoot him dead.

WHERE THE LEADERS WERE
L.K. Advani was with Arun Jaitley, V.K. Malhotra and Venkaiah Naidu in his room near gate 8.
