NEWSNOTES: CONFESSIONAL

UDDHAV THACKERAY
Bal Thackeray's son on the Shiv Sena's, and his, future

Q. Is it true that Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray plans to anoint you the next chief of the party on his birthday?
A.
I would not know. To me it's not going to make any difference. I have been handling the party's affairs since 1995 and will continue to do the work assigned to me. As of now there is only one pramukh and that is my father.

Q. How are you going to retain power in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)?
A.
We are aware of the general anti-incumbency feeling in the city. But I have instructed our candidates to fight on performance rather than bank on any split in votes due to the non-alliance between the NCP and Congress.

Q. Will it be your political test before your formal appointment as party chief?
A.
Not at all. I have dealt with many elections, from the 1995 BMC and assembly elections to several by-elections.

Q. You are different from your father, seen as softer. Will you change the Sena's image?
A.
I may not sound like my father. I believe in his ideology just as much except I express myself differently. I might not look as aggressive but I am very firm in my approach.

Q. Many Shiv Sainiks are crossing over to other parties...
A.
You cannot make everybody happy all the time. When an opportunity is not given then some people tend to cross over as it is the easiest way out.

TREMORS
India's Air Links With the World

China: The first direct air link between the two countries will be in place in March. No more transit halts.

Iran: The Teheran-Kabul-Delhi flight can take off again, but must still fly around Pakistan.

Europe: Flights are still packed though some of the airlines have disappeared from Indian (and world) skies.

Pakistan: Has become a no-fly zone for India. Things don't look like coming back to normal soon.
