HOW
TO IMPROVISE EXPLOSIVES
A notebook showed how a small quantity of plastic explosive like RDX could
be used to make crude bombs using material easily available at a department
store-a 5-mm plastic pipe, duct tape, bulb filament and wax. It also gave
detailed drawings of remote-controlled devices, types of switches used
and the configuration of explosives.
HOW
TO BLOW UP BUILDINGS
The purpose was to create havoc in urban areas, target food and water
supplies and even poison medicine supplies. The recruits were taught how
to destroy water and fuel tanks (see picture), how to blow up entire sections
of railway track by using minimum quantities of plastic explosive. The
notebook talked of demolishing buildings with and without beams, ways
of toppling them in a desired direction, and gave details on shaping explosives
and their placement. Electricity supply lines, power pylons, control rooms
and transformers were some other targets of disruption.
HOW
TO BE A CAR ASSASSIN
This motor-psycho nightmare told potential car-borne assassins how to
fortify their vehicles with steel plates and sandbags before embarking
on a hit. As for the hit itself, they were taught how to run the target's
vehicle off the road before firing, the exact angles at which to fire
from, the field of fire available to the driver and hitman and the coordination
required between them. Lessons also included selection of appropriate
arms like Micro Uzis and Heckler and Koch MP-5 sub-machine guns.
HOW
TO LAY A BOOBY-TRAP
Objects of everyday use could be easily rigged with explosives
to kill people: chairs that exploded as the target sat on it,
tobacco pipes filled with plastic explosive that blew up on
being lit and, yes, car bombs that detonated on turning
the ignition key.
HOW
TO TARGET AIRCRAFT
Among aircraft, terrorists were advised to target helicopters. "They
are dangerous as they are effective almost anywhere-hills, valleys and
deserts," stated a manual. Hence, vulnerable areas in stationary
aircraft were specified along with the exact quantities of explosives
to be used to target them. If explosives weren't available there was always
the option of using one gallon of petrol to immobilise the aircraft.
HOW
TO DISABLE A WARSHIP
"A warship can be immobilised by placing 1.2 kg of plastic explosive
on the propeller shaft. A mere 1.3 kg can destroy the engine ... 4 kg
on the base can sink it ..." The methods of disabling and destroying
warships may seem strange because Afghanistan is over 500 km from the
sea, but the methodology mentioned in a Rishkhor notebook was used with
devastating effect by an Al Qaida suicide boat to cripple the USS Cole
off Aden in 2000.
