NEWSNOTES: CONFESSIONAL

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
The BJP's minority cell convener on his stand post-Gujarat riots

Q. How do you react to post-Godhra violence in Gujarat?
A.
Godhra was an act of terrorism but the Opposition's attitude to the incident turned it into a communal one.

Q. Did the state Government handle the situation well?
A.
Nobody is satisfied but Chief Minister Narendra Modi can't be accused of abetting the violence.

Q. After being indicted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), should Modi be sacked?
A.
NHRC may be right but such claims now would hamper the return to normalcy. Replacing Modi is no solution.

Q. Do the Gujarat riots signal a resurgence of Hindutva?
A.
Hindus can't be fanatic. The new generation, including Muslims, abhors communalism. If not, the Muslim League would have won at least 75 Lok Sabha seats.

Q. What should the BJP do to win the confidence of Muslims?
A.
First dispel misgivings created by the Opposition. Soon Muslims will trust the BJP.

Q. Should the BJP snap ties with the Sangh Parivar to woo Muslims?
A.
It is not possible since the party has roots in the RSS.

Q. Should there be a temple or mosque in Ayodhya?
A.
It has become a political issue and not a religious one. We should wait for the court verdict and a time frame be fixed for the court to deliver its decision or even for negotiated settlement.

TREMORS
Growth of New Economy Sectors

Biotechnology: With investments in India expected to touch $4.5 billion in the next decade, it's the next big thing.

IT-enabled services: This sector is on a romp as call centres and medical transcription centres rake in money.

Software industry: Doing well but only modestly. Nothing as spectacular as during the days of the boom.

Dotcom ventures: Two years after the slide, no sign of revival. Wannabe millionaires can still be heard wailing.
