Bill of Exchange

The Opposition parties led by the Congress should feel ashamed at having sent the message to the world that though we talk of fighting terrorism on the global front, we are divided over the issue in our own country ("Lethal Weapon", April 8).

S. Balakrishnan, Jamshedpur

In Course of Time

It is unrealistic to draw comparisons between an old golf course like the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) with ones that have come up more recently ("Royal Decline", April 1). In the past four months, a string of all-India and international tournaments have been played at the RCGC with many golfers praising the course. As for the monthly subscription, it is not Rs 150 as mentioned but Rs 350. Also, there has never been any proposal seeking to hike the membership fees. And it is pertinent to note that the venue of the Indian Open or any major tournament is the prerogative of the sponsor. And corporates, unfortunately, are moving away from Kolkata.

Kuldip Singh, committee member, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Kolkata

Moral Sense

Increasing incidents of familial strife and crime reflect the dichotomy between an unthinking infatuation with the western way of life on the one hand and time-honoured Indian traditions on the other ("The Mysterious Death of Natasha Singh", April 1). Instead of merely trying to ape the West, we need to be discriminating in our choices in consonance with our religious and moral value systems.

Sonia Kapoor, Noida

Clarification

It was reported that Union Sports Minister Uma Bharati had advised the PMO to stall the Indira Sagar power project in Madhya Pradesh to stymie the Chief Minister Digvijay Singh ("Newsnotes", April 8). This is incorrect. The chief minister, in fact, wrote to her expressing gratitude for her role in facilitating the project. The error is regretted.
