EASTERN LIGHTS: Ghosh's Kimono collection and Babita's bridal
wear (below) are trendy
|
One rarely
encounters designers from other parts of the country. But Kolkata designer
Kiran Uttam Ghosh is an exception who is well heard of. She counts among
her customers celebrities such as Tina Ambani and Raveena Tandon.
Her's was the solo opening show at the Lakme India Fashion Week at Delhi's
Taj Palace. Ghosh showed her Kimono line, a brand already on shelves of
fashion stores such as Ffolio in Bangalore, Ogaan in Delhi and Ensemble
in Mumbai. Her forte is a steady, wearable, commercially viable line in
bright colours and a range of designs (from Rs 400 to Rs 15,000, including
the trousseau). Ghosh's silhouettes are clean and the fabrics drape well.
Also check out Kimono accessories that include a funky line of handbags
and mules to wrap up the look. Her motto: "You are only as good as
your last collection."
Another ambitious designer to note from Kolkata is Babita, a young lady
whose forte is bridal wear. She has just unveiled her collection of saris,
suits and lehengas at 1/51, Front Side, West Punjabi Bagh, West Avenue
Road, New Delhi. Call: (011) 511-7120.

TREND SPEAK
I like the sexiness of sophisticated tailoring over bohemian sloppiness,
keeping the silhouette lean and polished. I like the colours of minerals,
stones and gems, and am a champion of minimalism.

Statement: Lakme's Fashion Statement 2002-3 was unveiled even before the
Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW) began at the Taj Palace in Delhi last week.
Last year, it was "Sparkle, Shimmer, Shine". This year, it's "Think
Brilliance, Think Lakme", a celebration of bright colours and moments.
Swarovski Show: Couture king J.J. Valaya showed his Swarovski obsession
on his clothes again as he previewed his Fall-Winter 2002 collection at
an exclusive show at the Swarovski Creative Service Center in London recently.
He paraded his collection to top fashion media houses. We should see more
of that at the LIFW.
