TRAVEL: WANDERLUST
City of Treasures
SPOTLIGHT
There's
more to Aurangabad than the world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora.
This city of gates in Maharashtra boasts 52 of them, all exuding history.
PILLARS OF STRENGHT: Bibi Ka Maqbara (above);
the town of Daulatabad
Visit Bibi Ka Maqbara where Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's
wife was buried. A replica of the Agra monument, it is known as the Mini
Taj of the Deccan and is surrounded by a planned Mughal garden replete
with ponds, fountains and pavilions. Pan Chakki, a 17th century water
mill, is a must-visit spot. Its eight km-long underwater channels culminate
in a waterfall that powers the mill. Five km away, nestling in the hills
are 12 Buddhist caves dating back to 3 AD.
Other tourist spots are the 18th century Ghrishneshwar
Temple (30 km); Pitalkhora temples with 13 cave sanctuaries; Daulatabad
with its 12th century fortress and a five-km wall; and Paithan, a town
famous for Paithani saris.
You may also just be in time to catch the Aurangabad
festival from December 21 to 24, which celebrates the city's rich local
art, culture and heritage.
Aurangabad is well connected by bus and trains
from Mumbai. For details, log on to www.mtdcindia.com or call (0240) 331198/1513.
