| Paris Calling Who needs India Fashion Week as a platform to fame? Assam-born stunner Monikangkana Dutta, 20, may not be a regular on the domestic circuit, but she has been doing her turn on the catwalk for the likes of Ungaro and Chanel in Paris. A Metropolitan Top Model Contest 2003 finalist, she was picked up by the agency's Paris wing. "Her prospects are much better there than here," says friend and one-time trainer Nayanika Chatterjee. Adds the former model: "While Indian runways are trying to break out of the mould, they are still too conventional. Assamese models are not seen much on the Indian runways, but Assamese features are a big trend abroad." Watch out for this runway success on fashion channels. |
| What a Kick! A celeb on the runway is not a new fashion gimmick. But when Baichung Bhutia took to the catwalk in Delhi last week, he became the first Indian football pin-up to do so. Invited by the World Bamboo Congress to walk the ramp for a bamboo show, Bhutia scored a goal with the invitees on his fashion debut. Says revivalist Madhu Jain of the label M who, along with model Milind Soman, put up the show: "Baichung was the perfect choice as bamboos also have a strong association with the Northeast. Besides, he is trendy and was a natural on the runway." We would call him India's David Beckham, only he may turn up in a skirt next time. |
| Power Powwow Will Shah Rukh Khan be at Amitabh Bachchan's Holi bash? That's the big question after the altercation between SRK and Amar Singh in Dubai. Though both are now playing down the row, which happened over Singh and Bachchan's seating arrangement, it ain't over yet. SRK claims "too much is being made of it", but adds in the same breath that Singh first insisted he was "misquoted", and then "appears to have backtracked". As for Singh, he says SRK may have called him a goonda in jest, but adds cheekily that the actor has an "ajeeb sense of humour". The Big B's guest list will provide a new twist to the ajeeb dastaan. |
Hot Item The jokes on thunder thighs and southern comfort don't apply to Madhuri Bhattacharya. The latest entry to south Indian films, the Bengali is a beauty pageant product. And if her body type is unconventional for the industry, her Bengali background is even more so. Rivals sniggered that being an outsider she wouldn't last long. But Bhattacharya's first film Khushi did well, as did the next one Bisi Bisi (hot, hot in Kannada). She is a bisi bisi find, even with the scary blue contact lenses. Compiled by Kanika Gahlaut |
