   NATION: BJP AND SHIV SENA

Saffron Revolt

The wrath of mutiny came visiting the Hindutva Parivar last week. In Mumbai, Bal Thackeray's nephew, Raj, quit party posts and challenged cousin, Uddhav, virtually splitting the party. In Bhopal, Uma Bharati revolted against the nomination of Shivraj Singh Chauhan as Madhya Pradesh chief minister. Both the BJP and Shiv Sena have been wracked by rebellions in the past but are in denial over the need to reinvent for the future.

UMA BHARATI, SUSPENDED BJP LEADER: "I am the real BJP. I am BJP. Who are they to expel me from the BJP? I will neither accept it, nor recognise it."
RAJ THACKERAY, SHIV SENA LEADER: "The party is being ruled by a coterie of clerks around Uddhav and has passed into the hands of middlemen."
