   SOCIETY & THE ARTS: FASHION

Stars & Striptease

Zippergate and Nipplegate and all that slipped between the cup and the clip. Mumbai had it all as the Lakmé Fashion Week took over the social calendar.

HAIR HE IS: Ritu Beri's Happy Hour was more Bollywood-movie-gone-bad than a fashion show. Just as well Rani Mukherji was in the front row (escorted by new best buddy Sabyasachi). Salman Khan (above) watched lady love Katrina Kaif glide down the ramp looking like a strawberry fruitcake.

SEAMS APART: Carol Gracias lost her shirt, literally, when the Bennu Sehgall design she was wearing came undone. A Lascelles Symons skirt played peek-a-boo with Gauhar Khan's bottom. Head-turners Ujjwala Raut and Shivani Kapur nearly followed suit with their tops threatening to slip. The issue made it to the Maharashtra legislative council, with Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil ordering a probe. Wardrobe malfunction was enshrined in the Indian lexicon.

WORST FOR WEAR: style statements that were not haute
BERI SORRY: First frills and flounces. Then thick leather belts on candyfloss saris. What was Ritu Beri thinking when she did the finale?

EYE SORE Mumbai favourites Shane & Falguni Peacock's eyelash jewellery was not in sync with their Peacock Girl's spit and polish. The designer duo has definitely grown but so have their models' eyelashes.

IS THAT A SKIRT OR A SHOE? The Versace intern has clearly lost the plot. Is Donatella to blame for Shahzad Kalim's confused collection?

PUPPY POWER: It would have delighted Cruella de Vil but Dino Morea's Dalmatian-gone-wrong for Suneet Verma's Tuscan Verve did nothing for either of them.

A STAR IS BORN: Kanpur boy Rahul Mishra, 24, a National Institute of Design student who showcased his collection in the GenNext category, got the thumbs up from hard-to-please Browns representative Albert Morris, the man who discovered Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Morris held Mishra up as an example during a buyers' session and implored that the fashion industry sustain his genius. His collection Ray of Light had brilliantly constructed and deceptively simple reversible garments made from handloom textiles sourced from Thiruvananthapuram and Balrampur.

"Photographers around the world love my never-ending legs but I wish my nose was straighter.''
UJJWALA RAUT
MODEL AND NEW MUM

SILENT TREATMENT: Narendra Kumar Ahmed might have lost the MRTPC case against the Fashion Design Council of India but he wasn't going to take it lying down. Aptly titled "In Protest", his collection saw models in minimalist cuts with an unusual accessory, a gag.

NEW MUSE
: He discovered Goan hottie Ignatius Camillo and now designer Wendell Rodricks has netted another newbie stud. Rodricks's show-stopper was presented by Aquib Afzal, younger brother of English cricketer Usman Afzal, the latter better known as Amrita Arora's boyfriend. And in a befitting turn of events, Wendell's muse Malaika Arora Khan gave Aquib pointers on his catwalk debut. Rodricks spotted the 21-year-old at a Mumbai restaurant and cajoled him into walking the ramp. Usman and Amrita are quite proud of the ramp scorcher in the family. Why not? Seems the Mohawk-sporting Aquik has already received more offers.
