ART

Paintings -- Sudeep Roy
(Art Today, Delhi; April 17-28)
What is remarkable about these watercolours is the effective use of light and shade, whether to highlight spaces (Market, Beyond Darkness), depict a gentle fading away (Old Musician), or even portray everyday events like the burning of the effigy of Ravana. These paintings are not complex commentaries on modern living. They're simple, pretty and soothing to the eye.

MUSIC

Jugalbandi (Duet) Series -- Balamurali Krishna, Bhimsen Joshi
(Navras Records; Rs 65 each)
These two volumes contain a rare jugalbandi (not an effort at fusion) between Hindustani and Carnatic music by the two great masters, in ragas Darbari Kanada, Malkauns, Bhairavi and Bhairav. It is not a predictable presentation as the solo passages are interspersed with sections in which the artists alternate short phrases, imitating and responding to one another, even overlapping.

ODD ENDS

Women's Voices
(Indian Habitat Centre, Delhi -- April  23-25; French Cultural Centre -- April 23-29; Installation Exhibition moves to Alliance Francaise -- April 28 to May 7)

Delhi University and the Embassy of France along with some other organisations are putting up three parallel events in memory of French writer Marguerite Yourcenar. There's a three-day seminar on women's writing that will be atten-ded by prominent women writers, a film festival, and an exhibition of photo installations.
