Iraq ‘pleased’ with India’s stand
Raj Chengappa

"It was an excellent stand by Prime Minister Vajpayee and indicates the good relations that India and Iraq enjoy with each other"
Adday O. Al-Sakab, Iraq’s acting ambassador to India

Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee’s categorical assertion in Parliament yesterday that India wants a peaceful resolution to the Iraq crisis and was against the US and its allies taking any unilateral action has been welcomed by Baghdad. In an exclusive interview to INDIA TODAY, Adday O. Al-Sakab, Iraq’s acting ambassador to India, said: “ We are very pleased with Prime Minister Vajpayee’s statement. We think it was an excellent one and indicates the good relations that India and Iraq enjoy with each other."

The Iraqi ambassador was particularly happy by Prime Minister Vajpayee’s statement against any regime change in Iraq being imposed by outside powers and felt it was “ a clear reiteration of India’s approach.” In Parliament the Indian prime minister had said: “ If a change has to come about, it should be done by the people of that country. No outside power has the right to do that."

Adday Al-Sakab was categorical that Iraq “ wants peace” and is against confrontation of any kind. The Iraqi ambassador said: “ The international community is also interested in the peace and stability in the entire region which a war will certainly disrupt.” He asserted that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction left as charged by the US and stated: “ Baghdad will fully comply with UN resolution 1441 as we believe it would lead to a peaceful settlement.”

The Iraqi ambassador felt that there was no need for another resolution and pointed out that both UN chief inspectors Hans Blix and El Baradei were “positive” about Iraq’s compliance. Adday Al-Sakab was optimistic that trade relations between India and Iraq would move ahead rapidly once the crisis was resolved.
